Joe the Plumber, Bob the Banker, Barack Obama, "socialist hell" | Salon

An excerpt:

That leaves my taxable income at $213, 766 under Obama, $213,433 under McCain. Now we have to factor in the bracket cutoff, which for 2009 is $208,850. Anything below that figure for married couples filing jointly is taxed at the fourth tier, 28 percent. Any income above it, until you get up to near $400,000, is taxed at the fifth tier. And this is where the raving income-redistribution scheme of Barack Robespierre Obama kicks in.

As you can see, my taxable income is about $5,000 higher than the cutoff. McCain is going to tax that $5,000 at the current rate, which is 33 percent. But Obama's crazed plan calls for raising that rate to β€” get ready for it β€” 35 percent.

And here's what this means. Under McCain, my total tax bill would be $48,254. Under Obama, it would be $48,511.

That's a difference of $257. I'll say it again: Two hundred and fifty-seven dollars.

That's not two hundred and fifty-seven dollars I, or America, can afford.

Is this what the neo-cons are really using as a basis for "spreading the wealth"?

Today on my way to lunch I passed a homeless guy with a sign that read ‘Vote Obama, I need the money.’ I laughed.

Once in the restaurant my server had on a ‘Obama 08’ tie, again I laughed as he had given away his political preference—just imagine the coincidence.

When the bill came I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept. He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need—the homeless guy outside. The server angrily stormed from my sight.

I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to thank the server inside as I’ve decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy was grateful.

At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient deserved money more.

I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.

Flawed analogy. But maybe entertaining for some simplistically-minded conservatives.

You should have given the $10 to the construction company so they can patch the bridge over which you drove to get lunch. That expenditure is also needed as part of running the state and nation. Is that expenditure a "redistribution of wealth"?

hahaha what tripe

Yeah, if you're a selfish pig who believes all Americans who are struggling or living in poverty do not work and deserve their lot. Why should anyone of us have to chip in for our infrastructure, police, fire, schools etc? Need I answer that question for you??

Its like the king and peasant all paying the same taxes, meanwhile the peasant is starving and literally does not have enough of the basics while the king has 7 homes, several cars and more than plenty to eat. Will you be happy only when this country is like one of those middle eastern or latin american countries where you have a few billionaires and the rest of the masses are starving and broke? What has happened to our middle class? Let's get it back so it can spend some money and invigorate our economy BOTTOM UP!

And here is where your wong. After Obama takes and cancels the tax cuts, that $257 becomes $2500, but even if $257 was true, I thought Obama wasnt raising taxes on ANYONE that made less then $250,000 a year.. Here we have someone making $48K a year with a tax increase.

You need to answer it for me, but before you do, let me remnd you that the four examples you gave are NOT federal tax liabilities. They are either state or locally funded.

Start with this book and you will get a much better knowledge of what "redistribution" entails. Then we can talk.

Either people here are very well-off, or else they THINK they might be someday.

Otherwise, I don't know how they defend the rich, and think that the middle class and working class aren't doing their share. What we're saying is: it does not MATTER if you work hard - it doesn't mean you have enough money to eat, have shelter, etc. We have people in my hometown who work, but can't afford housing, so they live in the shelter.

The gap in income is WAY off, and getting worse. Let me tell you - it was different once - I'm an old gal - and it was perfectly fine for people to be able to live on just about any income. I liked it that way. The way it is now is just shameful.

We used to watch out for each other in the "old days" - not so much of this greed that's going around. It was honorable to work for a company who paid you enough to LIVE on.
