Florida declares emergency, extends early voting hours | MiamiHerald.com (http://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics/AP/story/745088.html - broken link)

Florida's GOP lawmakers blamed for early-voting lines

Popular Florida Republican Governor Crist apparently does not want Florida to get another black eye due to avoidable chaos and disenfranchisement - multi-hour waits at early voting sites.

Despite predictions of greater than expected turnout and objections by Democrats, Florida's Republican legislature had previously limited early voting to 8 hours per day, making it more difficult for many average working persons to get to the polls. Crist has now extended that to 12 hours for the rest of this week.

It's a good move by Crist, the lines have been crazy and now that they've extended the hours on the weekends also it will give everyone more than enough opportunity to cast their vote. I was planning on waiting until Election Day, but I've decided to make a day of it Saturday and camp out all day if need be. The great news is that turnout here in Florida is through the roof, the excitement of Obama has really gotten people enthusiastic and I'm so glad to see it.

Yep. In 2012 it is quite possible that Crist would be an attractive big state "centrist" Republican able to shed the discredited neoCon/wingnut mantle that lost the 2008 Presidency and a ton of Congressional seats.

Crist would get credit with independents and Democrats for doing the right thing despite opposition from his own GOP legislature with their suspected vote suppression tactics.

I agree, as a Democrat I like him a lot and I think he'd be a good choice by the Republicans. However, I don't think he would pass the mustard according the far-Right establishment, just look at what has happened to John McCain since 2000.

Predictions are many states will not be able to handle the high volume of voters. Please--if you can vote early, do everyone a favor and go to the polls this week. I'd hate to hear about people being turned away--but that has happened before on election day when they can't handle the number of people who show up.

If they want to win it back they'll need to get behind somebody like Crist...or the Governor from Minnesota. He seems to be of the same ilk and is popular in a Democratic state.

It's awe inspiring to see these lines--but I have to say I'm glad I did my bit to keep the lines shorter by already voting.

This is like news clips we see of elections in other countries, people actually standing in line to vote, a long overdue first for this country.

If nothing else the last 8 years has got the attention of the self-centered masses who now realize OMG it really does matter who we elect

No excuses, go vote!

Can't say it enough. Get out and vote! Today would be good. The lines will only get longer...
