Republican adviser, Ed Rollins [who served in the Reagan administration] has been discussing the decline of the GOP on CNN. Rollins claims that the Republican party is now almost entirely rural Southern\Plains States\ & a few "mountain states." With the exception of Texas, their are no large cities of consequence in farm states with declining populations.

Will the Republican party survive if it is a "Southern" party?

The GOP will split into the "Christian Social Conservative" party (predominantly Southern and Great Plains) and some amalgam of the more sophisticated members of the various "small government" conservatives and libertarians.

A one party country is very dangerous. If the GOP does fade away, it will be the Democratic party that splits.

Why can't evangelicals and fiscal (small government) conservatives unite under one banner? Why do people on this forum HATE evangelicals so much?

* Whistles Dixie*

So what if it is?
We'll keep it alive so that when the nation gets sick of Democrats it can come back strong again.

If you are an evangelical let me ask you this. I am a catholic. Would you be ok with the rosary being prayed in the classroom? Or that the Catholic church bishops be heavily involved in the Republican party? [like Dobson\Robinson\ etc].

The church has no place in the government. Once the GOP realizes this than Republicans will gain some recognition.

I think so, too.

The "Southern Party" idea - a few days ago someone had a thread with a link to this fantastic "Changing Political Map" from the BBC - slide that slider and see how the US votes shook out over the years, from 1948.

Why is the "decline" of a party discussed just because a candidate who should have NEVER been the nominee loses? Hasn't it been, Rep, Rep, Dem, Rep since Ronald?

I think I remember Carvel talking about what a mess the Dem party was in when Kerry lost.

If the Repubs get a great candidate in 4 years, they will be right back in the office.

I'm a Southern Catholic, grew up mostly around Baptist and evangelicals don't try to practice this crap at schools.

You get more harrassment from Mormons than any other group down here.

Robertson has minimal influence in the Republican party. I'll give you Dobson, but many evangelicals see him for what he is - a fake, in this for his own power and money. And nobody, not even George Bush has pushed for state sanctioned school prayer. Moment of silence, yes, but that is very non-discriminant.

Not a single new minority is being included in next years Congress for the GOP. And if you base statistics solely on race, then indeed the strength of the GOP is on the decline as people of color are the growing demographic in America.

The GOP is losing influence fast, as evidenced by the 2006 and 2008 rout. And Barack Obama had a higher percentage of white voters than did John Kerry in 2004.
