Anyone been through Transnistria?

I was thinking of going from Chişinău Moldova to Odessa Ukraine, or vice-versa.

But, looks like some visa troubles to do so. What I don't get is, if entire buses are going through that all the time, how can it consistently be an issue all the time (that Moldova doesn't stamp the passport for entry, and then give people a hard time when they later try to exit the country for not having an entry stamp? It seems like they'd have something to counter that problem.

To save time. It's 3 hours direct from Chisinau to Odessa, but a person has to go through Transnistria.

If you have to go around Transnistria, it is approximately 6 hours.

I have the feeling that you will be looking for trouble transiting Transnistria with an American or any kind of Western passport. You can be stopped at border, asked for bribes. Definetely not worth saving three hours of travel.

Right now there seems to be peace in the valley. But unfortunately we know people are hard at work on the lookout for 'troop' movements. I hope 'volunteers' aren't destined to appear in that area of the Russian, Ukrainian, Moldovan, Transnistria and Romanian world. With these cooks we certainly can get some bad recipes in that kitchen.
