Two friends and I hope to spend a week in Ireland in July (not enough time, but it's as much as one of us has). The friends are Bulgarians who have never visited the island (so we want to make sure they have an "Irish experience"); we are female academics in our late fifties interested in history, folklore, good walks, nature, and traditional music. We will not have a car but will be using public transport.
Recommended sights, itineraries, towns? We want to avoid the one-day-per-town syndrome of some of the big-bus tours and so will be on our own.
I should add that one of us is fascinated by Glendalough, which has limited accessibility by public transport; St. Kevin's bus service to/from Dublin seems to be it. Is the Glendalough Hotel a good place to spend a couple of nights? Are we likely to find enough rambles to keep us busy for two or three days? And is there a pub with music within walking distance ("walking distance" being anything less than a mile or so) of the hotel?
