Montpellier has unemployment only because LOTS of people move there.

The population is younger than anywhere else in Europe, and the crime rate is far better than in 95% of the world (if you want zero crime rate move to Japan).

Montpellier is full of students ! Employment is ok, and I don't think you are going to get carjacked every day there....

For a southern French city it is probably a safe choice, although personaly I'd rather go to Toulouse, but that's just me.

Aren't so safe anymore ? What do you means by anymore ?
Big French cities are not more dangerous than 20 years ago.

Strasbourg, Nantes, Lyon or Bordeaux are the best choices. Rennes is not bad if you have a car so you can visit the whole area

What do you mean by "a good weather" ? To me, there are no places in France where the weather is really bad or extreme.

Montpellier and Toulouse are not that safe.

Nantes and Rennes are definitely students friendly and very nice cities. Not far from the sea. Lots of cultural events as in many big cities in France.
Lyon is much bigger hence much more expensive.
I don't think you'd find much differences across the country when it comes to education.

Really, I'm not from Nantes but that's where I want to live if I go back to France even though the weather is better when you go South.

Montpellier, Bordeaux, Aix en Provence or Toulouse are my first thought. But once you leave Paris, education might be good in those cities depending of the field you are studying and the university. If it's about primary and secondary schools, you'll find good schools anywhere.
