Could someone from Spain or who has lived in Spain tell me about this. Just a quick and dirty summary will do. Is he a jerk or decent dude or what?

I'm not spaniard, but I can tell you he's a well respected person in Latin America. His wife, well she ain't no Queen Maxima. No charisma whatsoever.
We used to like king Juan Carlos, but I guess is falling into oblivion quickly...

He used to live and study here. He's a womaniser and a liar. The Finnish government protected him because he was the Spanish crown prince, and for that reason only. He probably has 10 bastards with 10 Finnish women.

Better in which sense?

One reason the British monarchy might be better is tourism. Plenty of people visiting London, love to parade around the royal places hoping to catch a glimpse of Queen Elizabeth or prince William. That cannot be said of the Spanish monarchy or any other royal houses for that matter.
