Actually only the Pinto one is in the class of the VW scam. The VW scam is deliberate and knowing. The Pinto perhaps because they continued to manufacture based on a cold calculation that it was cheaper to kill people than fix the problem was even more evil than the VW one.

The others are more errors made and not properly corrected...though for instance I don't think Takata or anyone involved saw that one coming or even really full understands it to this day.

Look at all these trucks that drive around in the redneck states. I don't think any of these little VW Diesel cars come close to the pollution those trucks cause.

Thanks city-data for yet another insight into our world and how it works.

Volkswagen doesn't represent each and every German nor Germany. However VW has a deep connection to the German state, hitler himself gave the company a big push as it's affordable cars fitted perfectly into the national-socialism he was implementing in Germany.
Certainly it is a multinational company but still headquartered in Germany and its board of directors is composed mainly of Germans. However all Germans aren't to blame for this poor decision, just like say Greeks aren't lazy nor responsible for the poor management of public debt when it is notorious the Greek government had been working closely with financial advisors and banks for the U.S., Germany and others.

I feel sympathy for Germans.

Most German companies had deep ties with Nazi-Germany, like I.G. Farben (now BASF, Bayer and others), Hugo Boss, Mercedes-Benz, Bosch, Deutsche Bank, ThyssenKrupp, ++. Even Ford had Nazi connections and it is not a secret that Henry Ford was anti-semtic and a Nazi sympathiser.

I do not see the similarities with the Greek crises. The Greek government has been elected by the public and corruption and tax evasion are huge problems in Greece.

Umm...why has this thread turned into a discussion about Nazis? And for that matter, why does every CD thread pertaining to anything German always turn into a discussion about Nazis?

It's a great blow to the GERMANY brand, but as someone pointed, VW is a truly multinational corporation.

There`s a big difference in regulating CO2 and regulating NOx.

NOx is poisonous, and CO2 is not.

VW sales of diesel cars in the US is miserable, so real pollution will be far more from their beloved trucks.
I find GM hiding their broken ignition switch problem for 10!! years is much more serious offense, 124 people actually died from these malfunctions.
I don't recall as much mass media attention to GM when all these deaths were uncovered. Why? It's GM, you know, Americans cannot criticize anything born on their land.

That's not true at all. The US government, in the name of it's citizens, fines both US and foreign multinational companies with much greater frequency and higher penalty than happens in Europe. Lots of examples since 2000. In 1998 46 US states reached a $206 billion settlement with Big Tobacco.

Here's an excerpt from a longer piece.

Still with Volkswagen, we explain why Europe focuses on carbon dioxide emissions while US regulators are far more concerned about nitrogen oxide, and why the current scandal could prove a tipping point for the motor industry.

Ironically in an industry where mechanical might is being challenged by tech know-how, it’s a nefarious software code that may herald the most serious threat yet to motoring’s old guard. Kyoto protocol: Why did we ignore NOx until now?
