Like a local: Helsinki | National Geographic Traveller (UK)

"Once content to leave the limelight to its flashier Scandinavian sister cities, Helsinki is a capital that’s finally found its voice. Feted for its architecture and design, the city is developing a creative edge, spearheaded by the rapid regeneration of the wondrously bohemian Kallio district"

But yeah yeah, if you're not a hipster or hunting for €3 pints, disregard the last clause.

... But oh, that was the point in the whole article.

I loved Helsinki when it was smaller. I might be overwhelmed by it now. But it's a charming capital. Your post inspired me to look into it some more. I was reading about the sailing clubs and sailing culture there, and all the islands to explore. That's something I could really get into. It would be great to make it back there, someday.

I went drinking in Kallio last time I was in Helsinki. I enjoyed the cheap pints and chatty people.

Älä helvetis. Much better than the stuck-up places with outrageous prices in the Centre.

Much better, cheap and friendly. Would like to go back but my mate that lives there has gone to rehab *sigh*

Great city. Every time I've been though it was winter. I want to visit again in the summer, and will also need to find better restaurants (my fault on the restaurants, not Helsinki's! )

Yep, summer is the best and do not just visit at Helsinki, have a look example Saimaa-lake region also.
My opinion is that this is more orginal Finland (Also other regions) than Helsinki.
All prices are also lower and great traditional food available, also lot of fun summer activities around the regions.
