Many Europeans retire at the Costa del Sol in southern Spain. However, it doesn't seem as prevalent as Americans retiring in Florida and Arizona. It could be related to language, different country or different preferences as far as staying near family.

I think it's similar to the number of Americans (and Canadians) who retire to Mexico, Costa Rica, or elsewhere in Latin America. That's definitely a thing too, but not for huge numbers of people.
The low cost in Florida is a thing of the past. The house may be cheaper than elsewhere, but that is it. Everything else from food to insurance, utilities is quite high.Manyof us cannot get homeowners insurance. Companies pick and choose where
they will insure in the state, due to storms. The long months of high heat and humidity, stretch well beyond summer. Europeans come here in droves mainly for vacations. Perhaps parts of Spain offer retirement choices for Europeans.
Also depends on where in Florida.
Up here in Canada we get lots of Florida realestate magazines as Canadians are the biggest
foreign buyers of Florida properties.
Some the prices are eye popping even to Canadians and our average home prices are high.
If near the coast, with direct water access, the prices are well over $ 1 million USD.
Actually on the coast in places like Naples, Jupiter, Boca Raton, etc...
Now you're talking $ 10 million plus.
A small house/trailer inland in a not so desirable location, are still relatively cheap.
most retirees stay where they are.
some move to another place in their own country that it is cheaper, or maybe more quiet, or closer to the beach or sunnier.
some others (less than the first 2 options) move to other sunnier and cheaper countries. Spanish mediterranean coasts, Algarve in Portugal, Southern France or even Morocco for some French/Belgian retirees are common options.
Florida has pretty hellish weather, with a good 6 months of unbearable heat and humidity, and it's expensive compared to most places in Europe, and certainly compared to Europe's sunbelt. Compare Malaga (Europe's top retirement destination) to Tampa - https://www.expatistan.com/cost-of-l.../tampa/malaga:
Monthly rent for 85 m2 (900 Sqft) furnished accommodation in NORMAL area
Tampa: $1141 Malaga: $540

I agree. I couldn't believe how cheap it is to rent nice condos in Marbella, Sevilla, etc. I've rented condos in Florida that were much more expensive and not necessarily nicer. I will say Florida is a little better climate in the winter and if you want to get in warm water you can do that in Florida in the summer, and the sand is better in Florida. On the other hand, the Costa del Sol has a warmer drier climate overall, is a much prettier area (in my humble opinion), and is much cheaper for restaurants and the accommodations.
I would compare Marbella to Santa Barbara but much cheaper.
Florida has a tremendous moist heat and too many criminals.-
Nothing there is in USA, as the Coast of Sun and Marbella in Spain. The Coast of Sun, has much better gastronomy and is more elegant atmosphere and calmy and beautiful nearby cities such as Granada ,seville and ,Cadiz-
And even is better the climate the mediterranean Coast in Valencia Alicante and the of Canary Islands .-
