I was in Athens a few years ago and had no problem finding people who speak English. however, I suspect that if you get out into the country it could be more difficult.

As a tourist? No need to worry about that.

I'm scouting places to live full-time. I'd visit first, of course but I am of greek descent and have always been interested in Greece. My family is from a rural area outside of Sparti but the only ones that remain are distant cousins that I have no contact with.

My job allows me to work remotely and live anywhere so I'm starting to think "outside the box." It seems that Greece is kind of a bargain right now. I'd like to live around 30 to 60 minutes outside of Sparti or Athens.

I was in Athens in fall 2015 and had no communication problems. I was only there for one day, though, so did not get out into the country or other cities.

Bluntly put, you are asking a dumb and offensive question. If you want to live somewhere full time, learn the language! Every country has it's own language and as much right to demand the people living there to learn it as the US has to expect people to learn English.
