A lot of people have the stereotype of Athens being only Acropolis and museums, and the rest of the city is like the bronx. Truth is that most of the historical center of Athens was ruined after the Greek civil war in 1950's, and most of baroque was replaced by 60's and 70's blocks, to host newcomers. However, a significant part of the old town has remained untouched. Today tourists usually visit the city during summer, with temperature reaching 40c, visit the Acropolis, nearby meuseums and then get into ferries to travel to nearby islands of the argosarnoic gulf, ignoring that the city has so many more thinks to offer

1) better visit the city during winter, spring or Autumn, you don't need to visit it during summer time, and don't overlook:

-Thisio, plaka, Monastiraki: The old town of Athens, with (especially in Plaka) lots of picturesque alleys and neoclassical buildings.

-panepistimiou street, with several wonderful baroque buildings, like Academy of Athens, national library etc

-Northern suburbs, like Kiffisia and Penteli, with lots of central European and Gothic architecture:

There are at least 4 ski resorts less than 2 hours from Athens:
Kalavryta snow center, mount Aroania, Achaea:
parnassos ski center, near Delphi:

Mainalon snow center, Arcadia:

Ziria ski center, near Corinth (this one not recommended at all for experienced skiers):

From my experience average minimum is 5, meanwhile average maximum 20. It has experienced -3 as well as 25, but both are rare during the winter. A typical day will be from 9 to 17

There is also a "midwinter summer" of 2 weeks known as "alkyonides meres", reaching maximum temperature

I enjoyed Athens too and like Giannis I think we felt fluked that midwinter summer... There were no tourists at all. We had blue skies and all of the history to ourselves!

Would you say that, especially the old town, partially resembles any other part of Europe, and if yes which one do you think?

It was a long time ago and truthfully we didn't spend a lot of time in the old town, instead visiting the ruins a lot more. I don't really recall.

I live in Athens for the past 10 years. Thought I love Greek people and their style, Athens is a terrible city to live in. Is unfriendly with everything, busy, dirty and full of refugees. All the Omonia area is a ghetto, there are very few nice places. This is city hall fault who simply doesn't care about its citizens.

In most of European capitals nowadays people live in ugly blocks and apartments in the suburbs. Athens, with 3 million inhabitants could not be able exception. What I am talking about, is that beautiful parts, like the old town and northern suburbs do exist

Moreover, you will agree that no tourist has any reason to visit, for example, patisia
