Hello to all forum members! As a citizen of Poland I'd like to get some of your opinions about visa restricions on Polish people. We, Polish citizens are deeply concerned about excluding us from the Visa Waiver Program upon adding many countries of Eastern Europe in last two years. I don't want to praise Poland and its support to USA here, I just want get to know points of view of Americans on this issue.
I say let Poland into the VWP, but my wife is Ukrainian/Polish so I am hardly unbiased.
I really would like to see it tried, though. Usually VWP depends on people not over-staying their visas - or otherwise "abusing" a non-immigrant visa to immigrate.
I have no connection whatsoever with Poland, but I would support a visa waiver for Polish citizens, they deserve it.
I skimmed through the wiki article, but did not find a terse explanation as to why Poland is not part of the program. Can someone explain it in an economy of words?
I could never understand the stubborn refusal to allow Poles a visa-free entry to United States, despite the fact that most European Union countries – often much less supportive of US on the international scene – have no visa requirements. It is widely known that no country in Europe loves the United States as much as Poland does . Poles were more supportive of the U.S. leaders than almost any other country in the world.Every post-1989 Polish government has been a strong supporter of continued American military and economic presence in Europe, and Poland is one of the staunchest allies of the United States. Poland outraged its western European allies by participating in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, but the mission there — where the Poles were in charge of a whole province — produced few economic or diplomatic benefits, and the military pulled out of Iraq a year ago. However, Poland is still fighting in Afghanistan.
European Union has threatened USA by imposing visa requirements for entry to any of EU countries if visas for Poles are not lifted.
Although Poland is in no sense anti-American, there is a growing feeling that the country overdid it in focusing so intently on Washington.
You have to hold Slate at a certain angle to read it straight:>) I asked for actual reasons not interpretations. If you do not know where the problem lies you will spin your wheels until the cows come home.
It's not political decision, the ass licking factor have nothing to do with VISA waiver. If I remember correctly, the criteria is that country must have less that 10%(or 5%) VISA application denied during last year.
Also, VISA waiver is not unrestricted. The only benefit is that you don't have to pay fee for VISA and it's bit faster. The guy on US airport can send you home the same way as with valid VISA.
Just apply for B1 VISA, you will get it for 10 years within a week, problem solved. For VISA waiver you need to apply before every trip. As I said, VISa waiver is not a free entry, you need to go through exactly same interview with immigration guy upon arrival.
