I am visiting family in Bremen, Germany for the holidays and we were planning for my cousin to drive us and do the tourist thing in Amsterdam. He now said that he doesn't want to go but we'd like to go. Its a once in a life time opportunity. I don't really feel comfy driving standard in two foreign countries, it looks like the other options are kinda expensive don't work out. KLM is very expensive, about $700 for us, bus wouldn't be bad but the day it runs are days we can't do it and the train is expensive too. Any other options that anyone could think?

One day only trip ?

Take the train, see if you can get there very early in the morning, then take the last train back, and walk all over when in Amsterdam.

Find out from VVV (the local tourist info right at most train stations) how to get around the city the easiest.
Find out about tripticks etc.

BTW, I do understand why your cousin does not want to go. A long drive just for one day ......
