So I want to buy a used luxury car and I've narrowed it down to 3 sedans and 1 GT coupe. Keep in mind this would be a fun car to drive on weekends only. I'm not going into this blind so please don't suggest I buy a Lexus instead . I've owned a Jag, BMW and Maserati before.
1. Early 2000's Jaguar XJR
2. 1995 or later BMW 840i or 850i
3. Late '70's Rolls Royce Silver Shadow II or Silver Wraith II
4. 1979 - 86 Maserati Quattroporte
I'm leaning toward the XJR because I could drive it more often if I want and the Rolls is my 2nd choice but they are all great cars for different reasons. The maintenance costs are probably about the same for the Jag and the BMW and obviously higher for the Rolls and Maserati just because of the cost of parts. Of course, I wouldn't drive them as much either. I do know the Maserati parts are the most difficult to find and it would probably need more repairs than the others.
I can get a nice example of the Jag for 10K, the BMW for 10-12K, the Rolls for around 15K, or the Maserati for 8-12K.
Just take a step back for a moment.......Ask yourself why am I doing this to myself?
All of the choices are 12-35+ yrs. old......none are going to be reliable runners (as in leave it in the garage for a week or two then stroll out on Saturday morning and fire it up for a morning drive, thinking battery drain will be the least of your troubles).
None are going to have the oooh, ahhh curb appeal of even a clean 60's Cadillac nor are current day performers (a new V6 Korean import would out handle, brake/accelerate any of the above). Resale is going to be tough on any of them, really tough if they get out of shape mechanically or cosmetically.
The toughest part about buying/owning yesterday's luxury cars even at a fraction of their original MSRP is that the parts/upkeep are all "full price"......no depreciation there!
We have had a few older Rolls in the past. If you get a solid runner it will be fine. If you get one with gremlins of any type, your mechanic will see the car more than you do. If you really want a classic Rolls, look at Bentleys from the 60's. Those are some fine autos and will turn heads.
