My husband and I are planning a move to Fairbanks, AK from S. CA end of Jan 2012. We have one 4-wheel drive car to drive up with 2 small/med dogs. Can any of you advise me on what's the best way to do this move? We're currently looking into containers from CA-Seattle with a container moving company then ship it there for our stuff and then do the good old drive until we die method with the dogs. I understand we'll have to go through the ferry...how's the ferry with the car and dogs? any suggestions/info/wise recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Welcome!! There is a search function that will answer 99.9% of your questions.

Also you dont have to take the ferry. Fairbanks is not on an island and you can drive here.

Both ways of getting to AK are wonderful. As far as your dogs go on the ferry, they have to stay in your car. You are allowed to let them out on car deck about, weather permitting (seas), every 4 hours. I'm not sure if the car deck is even heated though, so your dogs might be subject to the cold of January.

Not even sure if there is a ferry that comes up to Whittier in the winter, would have to look it up.

Read the Alaskan sticky thing at top of the page about moving...then ask away...You know to watch weather to plan your trip to WA...the dogs are going to be stuck in the car for the trip...for the container..look at the sticky I think maybe northern something, but you may have to pay from your house to WA...not sure, but good luck!

If you drive here are the basics.

You cannot enter Canada with a felony including DUI on either of your records.
You should be prepared for temperatures -60 farenheit.

The ferry is nice in winter however if you debark in Haines you will have to enter and leave Canada. Last time I looked there were no ferries to Whittier in Winter.

It is a fun trip, truly. Be prepared and take your cameras.
