Designers and Celebrities Band Together for Japan Relief - StyleList (http://www.stylelist.com/2011/03/18/designers-and-celebrities-band-together-for-japan-relief/ - broken link)
As for fashion designers, imho, helping Japan is the very least they can do. Japan is a huge fashion market; Japanese women are very fashion-conscious and spend a lot of money on all kinds of high-end, high-quality products from make-up to shoes.
Regarding the "stars" (sorry, but my definition of "star" when it comes to acting skills are people like Giulietta Masina or Susan Sarandon), they should simply donate and encourage their friends/families to do the same.
People who are generous and will make a much-needed donation to the Japanese, who were very unfortunately hit by this tragedy, should do so bc they believe this is the right thing to do and not bc they are "so-and-so-fans-who-will-do-whatever-their-favorite-"stars"-do".
They're the world's third biggest economy for Pete's sake, probably the second even, who knows
That they need help is actually an insult to Japan. The land of the Samurais knows how to save itself. They are well equipped for that. It's in their spirit.
When the news reports that "designers and celebrities" are now IN Japan, and wearing their radiation suits while working to fix the reactors, I'll be impressed.
What would be worse than them donating, is NOT that we'd hear nothing. Hearing nothing means we don't have to hear the "designers and celebrities" taking advantage of an international tragedy to hog the stage. What would be worse, is if we discovered that the ONLY reason they do anything at all, is to ensure a photo opportunity.
