This thread was partially inspired by the polo shirt thread. I see some merit in polos, and even wore them in some circumstances. For example, at least for me, they seemed to work well at dinner in a nice restaurant during summer months, and even at the office (I work in IT). Although in the last few years (I'm in my mid 30's), I began shying away from them, preferring to wear either a T-shirt or a long-sleeve shirt.

But one article of clothing I can't bring myself to wear, is a short-sleeve dress shirt. It just looks like it "can't pick a side": does it want to be casual, or does it want to be formal? Not to mention, many short-sleeve dress shirts make the wearer look like an exploited office drone or a corrupt cop. Now, this doesn't refer to things like Hawaiian shirts; I'm talking about actual dress shirts, but with short sleeves.

Anyone else agree or disagree? Feel free to elaborate.

why do you think they are dress/formal shirts and not casual wear?

I didn't say they were casual or formal. I was saying that they seem to be in that gray area in-between.

I dont see them as in between, it's no different than a t-shirt to me

no everyone likes collarless shirts, and may find button up easier to put on than putting it on over head

I have never heard of a short sleeve dress shirt before; I have always assumed that all short sleeve button-down shirts were considered casual shirts. In fact, even many long-sleeve button-downs are casual shirts rather than dress shirts. Dress shirts are usually of a solid color and are sold in more specific sizes rather than general sizes like S, M, L, XL, or XXL.

They exist, apparently. They look just like long-sleeve dress shirts, their collars can accommodate a tie, but the sleeves are T-shirt-length. And they're sized by collar circumference and sleeve length. I'm sure there are people who look decent in them, but not me. At the same time, I've worn casual long-sleeve dress shirts many times. I like how I look in them, and no one said anything negative, either.

Sure! If you’re working Mission Control in 1967. Otherwise, nope!

I'm not a giant fan just because they remind me of anybody's uncle at a family reunion in the 70s.

With that said, it is not up to me to tell guys what they should and shouldn't wear. Wear what you love! And be happy.

Short sleeve dress shirts are worn in hot locations where ties are required but jackets are not. Like 1970 NASA or a quick serve restaurant manager without a uniform in Mississippi.
