When/Why did men stop wearing hats and suits everyday?

Hats have the practical functions of keeping you warmer in cold weather and protecting you from the sun. I shook my head when I saw people in Chicago all bundled up and shivering while being hatless. I worked outside and when I wore a liner under my hard hat I could remove a layer of clothing.

Baseball caps though, they're low rent and an example of what Paul Fussell called proletarian drift; that bourgeois people now wear versions of the farmer's seed cap of the 1970s is amusing.

Most hipster type young people wearing them are too naive and callow to pull off a brim; they look contrived rather than cool. Older, well groomed and sharply dressed guys can pull of a lid much better.
