I know someone who has beautiful red hair. He's looking to get it cut. It's gotten pretty long and is midway down his back. I'm guessing it would be about 18 inches long. Is a reputable business that would buy this hair? It's not imperative that he sell the hair. He gets a lot comments on it. If he could sell it, he'd love it.
Would he consider donating it? There are a number of organizations that accept donations of hair to make wigs for cancer patients and those with alopecia.
I hope he donates it. It would mean the world to its recipient.
I'd suggest contacting a local chapter of The Red Cross or one of the larger Cancer Non-profits. Burn victims could also benefit from a donation. The salon that he uses might also donate so they could be a good source for contacts and hopefully they would know the proper way to care for the hair after its cut. There could be state regulations involved in the way the hair is washed and packaged when its being donated.
I had a friend who had very healthy, almost straight, thick virgin hair that went down to her waist. She took a lot of pictures and put it up for bid on ebay, guaranteeing a certain length of hair to the winning bidder. This is about 8 years ago now. I think she got about $200 for it.
Of course, if he sells his hair, he could also donate the money to cancer (or any other) charities. Some hair-donation charities end up selling much of the hair they receive, anyway, so he might as well cut out the middleman and just sell it himself.
Where is hair used and how come they just don't get it from salons/barber shops?
Human hair wigs. And most people don't have long enough, or healthy enough hair to make it worthwhile for barber shops etc to attempt to sell it.
There are some salons that will give you a free haircut if your hair qualifies to be donated to certain charities. Locks of Love for instance https://locksoflove.org/faq/
