I've noticed that many women are very photogenic. They can make themselves look great in a photo when the reality is a little less flattering. I suppose some guys are good at this too but I think women have more "tools" at their disposal to make this happen.
For example, below a more or less average looking girl can look quite attractive when make up and camera angle are tweaked?
And do you agree the lady above is "average" looking in the photo above ^^...while the first photo makes her look quite attractive?

Many humans are photogenic naturally without all the photo shop or *tweaking*, this is not gender specific and never has been. If one has to rely on the tweaks and touch ups then one is not really photogenic are they?
People are pleasantly surprised when they meet me, I'm sure. I'm much more attractive in person. Photographs do not do me any justice. It's pretty frustrating, actually. And, yes, I have heard other people tell me this. It's not just me being hopeful. No false advertising here
The downside is reality, and disappointing potential mates.
The upside (for those who aren't photogenic) is that they don't disappoint in person, and usually blow potential mates away with how great they look.
Another stinker is that photos last, while looks do not. Those less good looking folks get to pretend pretty much indefinitely--via their saved photos-- that they looked way better than they actually did.

There was an episode of the television program *Castle* that dealt with this very issue, Mr. CSD watched it and told me the way they handled the topic was very true to real life.

I could never be a print model. Oh well.
Yes, same here. I couldn't take a "good" photo if my life depended on it.
You could put a gun to my head and I could still never look good in a photo.
IDK, OP. I'm not at all photogenic. People say my photos don't look like me. So this isn't a topic I can relate to.
