I have enough knit caps for casual warmth. Have been looking at some wool felt hats that are a bit dressier. I like cloches because they still offer some protection from the wind and with small brims are less likely to blow off. Ebay has a lot of cloches they call Downton Abbey styles for less than $20.
My favorite winter hat for extreme cold is a modern version of Elmer Fudd’s hat. Waterproof/windproof nylon outer, with a dense synthetic pile lining, stiff visor, and big earflaps that also protect the neck. Tres UNchic, but oh, so warm, and suitable for wearing while snow is falling.
If it’s not windy or precipitating, the 300-weight Polartec fleece Headsokz better design of balaclava, which I bought at least 16 years ago, does the job while being fully breathable.
But my head gets hot easily, and I don’t like hathair, so often just some windproof earshields and a visor (lots of bright sun here, all seasons) suffice.
None of the above is enduringly fashionable except in some outdoorsy areas.
The above is where I get hats. I'm a man, by the way.
Got my hats already! I am keeping three of the six berets. This one is very flattering on me and has a wider band than the others. If it came in brown tweed I'd buy another one. I got it on sale but now it looks like it's back to full price.
If anyone has never worn a beret, you should try it. I thought they didn't look good on me but that was because I didn't wear it properly. There are subtle differences in sizes and how they fit on your head -- poufy or flat, big pancake or close fitting. You have to play with it. Shift to the front, back, one side or the other. You will probably find the most flattering.
I'd like to find a hat that is windproof and waterproof, covers the ears, and has a visor. Oh, and doesn't cost $45.
