Please state a reference for this.

At the federal level, you are allowed a 12,000 per year gift tax free. This does not exist at the state level to my knowledge. It's considered sales tax

Is it legal to give a car as a gift to a family member, or do I have to put a dollar figure on it (for example $1)

Default do any of you live in florida??

Yes in florida you can gift a car to a family member. Also you can not put less than $500 for the sale price or they will charge tax on the blue book value.

Not true. I just gifted a car to my kid and there was no sales tax.

Every state plays this one differently, and they are ALL hip to the fact that people like to devalue things in order to attempt paying high rates/taxes. If it were me I would simply call the DMV in the state the car is going to and ask them.
