I'm Kyle and I've lived in St Louis Missouri the last 27 years of my life and want to move to Florida. I sold my house and quit my job and saved up some money for the big move. I am not sure what would be the best part of Florida to move to. I am very active in beach volleyball, ultimate frisbee, kayaking, soccer and those sorts of things and I want to live near the beach. I have about 35k saved up and want to buy a house. I am thinking Clearwater, FL at the time being since it seems to have a lot of the things I am looking for. What do you guys think would be the best place for me?? Thank you in advance

Don't buy anything!

Rent for a year, learn the area and you will know exactly where you want to be!

I agree about renting before buying. Clearwater sounds like a good choice for you.

Clearwater Beach is one of our favorite beaches. Clean, well groomed lots of people, nice pier.

Since they re did the entire area a few years back it has become one of the best go to beaches in all of Florida.

Spend a few days in the area before moving to see if you get a good feeling about it.

DEFINITELY rent even if for a short term before buying.

You can even do a short term weekly/monthly execustay type rental which is essentially a motel suite with all utilities etc while you get your bearings. (if there's a reasonable one near that area. I see them in other places for 250.00 per week).

Or on sites that rent temporary places for vacation by owners: VRBO® is Vacation Rentals By Owner

Florida is tricky. There are gems hidden all over that you will never see until you live here and really take the time to investigate. You can drive down a street and see great houses with beat up ones right nearby. Also in a year, sometimes you get better clarity about your priorities. You also need to check out those sports availability since you're wide open to the different areas.

^^^ Yes your job should basically decide where you move. Unfortunately not the other way around as our economy still has some rebounding to do.

From your post, it sounds like you are relatively young and will likely need to work. Along these lines, there are a ton of beach towns in Florida, all offering the amenities you seek. There are also about 6-8 sizable markets; several with good career opportunities and others with more service-sector, tourism-driven employment. Also, some areas are better for retirees, while others offer more for young working people.

There's nothing wrong with moving to Florida to enjoy the beach life (we did so almost 40-years ago (from KCMO) and still have no regrets). Further, $35K is a much better 'stake' than many move to Florida with and should give you a lot of options and some 'breathing room.' But, there's a lot more to life than playing beach volley-ball and making a good down-payment on a house. What type of work will you do in order to buy groceries and make your mortgage and car payments?

Florida is wonderful and I certainly want to encourage you to 'follow your dream.' But, recognize that even with the sand, palm trees and balmy weather, people in Florida still have to work and live .... just like everywhere else. Thus, the "where" part of your dream, needs to be tempered by the "what and how" pieces.
