My girlfriend's vehicle is registered in Florida to her mother's address, and my girlfriend lives with me in Maryland. My girlfriend is looking to buy a new car here in Maryland and would like to keep her Florida tag on her new car, since she still can receive mail at her mother's address in Florida.

What is the process or form that needs to be filled out for her to transfer her Florida tag to her new vehicle when she buys one? The Florida DMV website was not very helpful. Thanks in advance.

Since GF lives in Maryland, getting the car registered in FL would be illegal.
You would need to have the new cars title transferred to FL. That cannot be done without
residence in FL.

What I was trying to say was she had an address in Florida, where her mother lives and goes there often.

How do you transfer the car title to FL?

You would have to go to Florida and present the car, and id
proving residence. If you have the title you would need that also. If you don't, it would have to be transfered to Fl. You would also have to show proof of Fl insurance. Basically, forget about it.

One of the first things would be to become a FL resident. You have to declare residency. Having an address is not sufficient.

My girlfriend has her FL driver's license and FL insurance on her current vehicle. So would she still need to go to florida to present the vehicle to the DMV? There is not transfer tag paperwork that can be filled out and mailed so she does not need to make that trip down there? Again, she just wants to take her current FL tag off her car here and put it on her new car, not get a whole new FL tag.

Seems to me that GF is already violating the law by having a FL DL and not being a resident.
Also must be violating the law in the current location by not registering the vehicle in that state which is probably a requirement there. Good luck on her endeavor to purposely violate the laws of two states for some unknown reason.

What is the reason for her wanting to keep her FL tag?

The car dealer usually can do this paperwork. I did all my transfer title/registration/tag from old car to new car without going to the DMV. Though my dealer was in FL. But call the MD dealer and ask whether they do the FL stuff. If the dealer cannot do it, then check the FL DMV web site or call them to find out how to transfer via mail.

You aren't supposed to simply pick an address and say you live there just because someone that lives at that address allows you to use it. Not understanding why she would choose to break the law when it's just as easy to do everything in MD.

if she really wants to have a FL license and presumably FL insurance, buy the car in FL and have the dealer handle the process using her legal FL address. Possibly the dealers have a reciprocal relationship. Others are correct registering an auto in a state in which you have not established legal residency can get you into trouble.
