Places like Tallahassee and Gainesville are pretty much the kind of places where peolpe get their hair cut at Supercuts and similar. Not great places to make a good living IMO. Robyn

Of course it's possible to succeed there but the point is why, when there are areas with less competition and that are arguably nicer in terms of the OP's relative's ideals.

Wow, you are one liberal dad - you're basically cruising for your son, lol!

- OHHH... I seriously misread that! I thought that was a joke, like "he wants to work by day but he's really moving for the guys." LOL, my mistake! Hope that didn't embarrass you too much, but that's too funny to just delete... Ahem, my bad, you were answering the question about salon vs. barbershop, not working vs. recreational goals, lol! I seriously thought that meant you were here posting to help him find a good city for him to meet guys in, and I was wondering why nobody else commented on your joke! *Sigh* This is why it's hard to give people advice over the internet... lol!

I guess another relevant question might be then if he has any interest in focusing on Black hair, which of course would affect where he should move - more upscale salons in that case might be located in the Ft. Lauderdale area, for example. I think replies so far have assumed that he was interested in focusing on salons that cater to a white and mixed crowd in the most heavily populated parts of town.
