We looked at a home in Jax and the utilities averaged $600/month and the irrigation was reclaimed water. The house was 2800 sq ft and 25 years old. Is that typical or are rates higher in different parts of the state?

That sounds awfully high. Was there a big growing operation in the garage?

That is a very high rate for a 2,800 sq ft home. Something isn't right. Either the AC is a mess or as kokonutty said, they were growing something in the garage.

JEA rates are similar to FPL. I have a 5500 sq ft home with 3 air conditioners, pool with heater, etc. My bill is about $425. Something is way off to spend $600/mo on a 2800sqft home.

Rates do vary across the state. Gainesville Regional Utilities is near the top in terms of expense. Clay Electric, which is what we have, is about the middle of the pack and FP&L near the bottom. In South Florida, Sunrise water is on the high side. We've been living in Alalchua County for about 1 1/2 years due to my husband's new job here, and comparing utilities here versus South Florida where we still have a home, I haven't seen much overall difference. We're renting a 2400 sq foot home here and own a 2700 square foot home in SFLA and utilities average half that, about $300 a month, in each home. Something's off--how old is the A/C?

With my bill from FPL, there was a rate increase proposal. It states that for using 1000kwh, the national average bill is $137.29, the Florida average is $120.93, the FPL average is $91.73 My meter is read on the 5th of the month. 1300 SF house, No A/C for 30 days, used 260 kwh, bill was $31.61
If a 2800 SF house has a bill of $600, serious investigation is needed. It's using around 6000 kwh. How old is the A/C. What is the SEER. What temp is the thermostat set. Is there a pool pump running 24/7. Has there been illicit activities in the garage. Is there something other than the house drawing that much electric.

I think your bill is extremely low even without using air conditioning. I don't think I have ever paid less than $80 for electricity from FPL in my 40 years in the state.. Family of 4 for 10 years no air in the house at all just fans. But in an all electric house using the washer and dryer for many loads of clothes a week we average about $120 a week. Months when we didn't need air or heat often this year we have been in the $95 range. (hadn't used the dryer for a couple months because it caught fire) I expect it to increase now that the repairs are done and we use it every day again.

I'm paying my monthly bill now. $66.44 in Charlotte County, FPL is the provider. Our house is almost 1,800 sq. ft. and I have the AC set at 75 degrees. I think this is rather cheap.

Second that. GRU is ridiculously expensive, Progress/Duke in Orlando was kinda in the middle, and FPL seems to be the lowest I've seen in the state, and I think they advertise that fact.

We are considering moving to Dunedin/ Tarpon Springs areas down to Venice/ Fort Myers, or St Augustine down to Ormond Beach. (We have reasons to moving to either area and haven't decided yet- we have time) What would the electric rates be in those areas. We would be getting a small home probably around 1200- 1500 sf.

It's kind of hard to just give you a figure. Everyone lives differently. Some have the AC on most of the year. Some set it at 78 all the way down to 70. 1 or two refrigerators, freezer in garage. Do you cook 2 or 3 times a day on an electric stove. I posted my bill a couple of posts up.
