There was no contract. I just trusted the person's word. All I have as proof would be a text where the person says the deposit is refundable. She did not return it. She stole it. I didn't take pictures. I constantly asked for a deposit receipt. All she gave me was a typed one that said, "move in fees," and now I realize she was planning on stealing it all along, because she is a thief. So if I sue to get the deposit money back, can I win or should I not waste my time?

The law is on your side- a landlord is supposed to put deposits into an escrow account they can't just raid on their own whim. But whether it would be financially worth it to go to court over the deposit and how easy it would be to collect any judgements is another matter

Landlord is supposed to provide you documentation as to why security deposit isn't being returned. Pursue it through small claims court if she doesn't send you why in writing.

Yeah, I would go to small claims court. There are rules on how to handle deposit money, which I'm sure she didn't follow. Remain calm and rational when you speak, so the judge doesn't just throw out the case.

It would end up being a who does the judge believe most and he might end up being the one that has to pay court cost. Owner might bring in pictures. She /he may have receipts for repairs. Witness on condition of place etc.

No contracts. Nothing stating a $$? deposit was paid. He mentioned move in fees. Might have been for credit check. No pictures of before move in or after move out? Lesson learned. maybe?

Small Claims Court will cost a few hundred dollars to file.
(If you win - you'd get it back.)

How much $$ was it?
