If I can remember since it was so long ago, I believe it was between the ages of 11 and 13 when my mother gave me a spare key and trusted me to come home by myself after school but this is a different time now.

Will the parents go to jail if there isn't an adult at home to supervise?

Thanks

Not quite there with my oldest but I was given my spare key when I went to Jr High at age 11.

The law in Florida is “depends on the maturity of the child”. No specific age.

er, doors weren't locked when I was a kid... but I came home alone (no siblings) by the 4th grade for sure, might have been 3rd... so 8 or 9. There was a small daycare (4~6 kids, not including their 2) immediately next door though, so my folks may have had some sort of arrangement with them to just keep an eye on the place/me.

Gotta wonder about the difference in personal independence between younger latchkey kids and what's been present for the last 2 decades since helicopter parenting came into vogue. I don't know of anyone from my generation who went back to their parents for longer than a couple months, and it was a Major situation to warrant even 2 months (broken back, guy became a paraplegic, this was 2 months after hospital stays ended).

I got an electronic lock, so the kids just get a code. I went through the lost keys or forgotten keys, then we tried hiding a key they wouldn't put it back. The electronic lock works awesome and I can check to see when they home by looking at the activity.
