We are making a family move...my wife and i, my 1 yr old daughter and my mother are all moving down there. We were looking at both of these areas and want some input. Only main concern is crime. We want to live in a area where we can walk outside at night with no issues. Would love some insight about both areas. Thanks in advance

If crime is your #1 issue, Spring Hill is your place. Most of the area is comprised of retired police officers from New York, and other Northeastern States. I'm sure many of them are packing heat. That is the last place in Florida I'd attempt to commit a crime.

If I recall when I looked on these sights both places are pretty safe.

Also I’ve read on here people suggesting looking at crime reports but I don’t remember the site.

Both areas are regarded as safe but would give the significant advantage to North Port for it's location and amenities. North Port borders other nice towns like Port Charlotte and Venice which offer plenty of things to do also, plus it's about 20 minutes to beautiful Englewood Beach. North Port is also way more family-oriented while Spring Hill as already noted is heavily retiree-oriented.

Spring Hill is much more rural both in and around where it's located, with the only other town with anything to do a good twenty minutes away (Brooksville). It also feels less Florida and more rural Georgia-like in my opinion. The nearest beach is at Pine Island Park about 20 minutes away. It's a tiny county park with a manmade beach and playground. While a beach it's nothing like what you'll find near North Port if that's a concern.

Northport is the area where a young mother was abducted from her home and raped and murdered a few years back and she was the daughter of a police officer. Her name was Denise Amber Lee. I remember reading that her father did not want them living in the North Port area but the price was good for a rental so they did. Her killer is now on death row. Not saying that this will happen to everybody but Northport I believe is not much of a community.

One more thing to consider is sinkholes. Google "sinkhole alley map". I know your post was concerned mainly about crime, but if you're from up north, you may not be aware of the sinkhole issues down here.

Basing an entire city's image on one isolated incident isn't the very logical, nor useful. Utilizing that criteria eliminates probably 95% of the communities in the Florida since pretty much every city has had some kind of similar unfortunate incident.

Like anywhere else, I'd say some areas are like that, but not many. The comparison to West Pasco is a bit of a stretch, to say the least. There are plenty of areas here where that wouldn't be tolerated, i.e. gated communities, golf course communities, etc.

I agree about the retired cops that another poster mentioned, as I know quite a few of them here.
