Florida has 450,000 people of Asian origin. Only 2.4% of the population, but still a large number. No need to go to a college town or military base to find them, either - there are plenty of non-student, civilian Asians living all over the state.

I've been to some of those stores. I've been to that Publix too.

Yeah. My older brother's wife is Chinese-American and her folks live in Florida. It's not the main destination for Asians, but a fair number live there.

Also, in case this hasn't been mentioned, Florida looks to have had several towns that Thais located to. Springfield, in the Panama City area, looks to be about the largest. Although Panama City itself doesn't look particularly Asian.

Orlovista, in the Orlando area, received a fair amount of Vietnamese.

Looking it up states that are around 1%, or less, Asian include

Alabama

Arkansas

The Dakotas

Kentucky

Maine

Mississippi

Montana

West Virginia - Although I think it's Salem, West Virginia that had a deal with a Japanese University so is one of the most Japanese towns in America.

Wyoming - Rock Springs once had a vibrant Chinatown, but this was destroyed in a riot. Some parts of the Rocky Mountain region was, I believe, once more Chinese than they are now.

Many of those are fairly small states though. Among the largest states Florida does look to be one of the least Asian, but Ohio's population is even less Asian by percentage. The American Community Survey for 2004 places Ohio as 1.4% Asian, my World Almanac places Ohio at 1.5% Asian. Which is not to say that Ohio is lacking in cities with vibrant Asian communities, but at the same time I don't really know.

Hmm, I made a topic about Asian Americans a while back.

Asian American statistical portrait
http://www.city-data.com/forum/15760690-post1.html

Top 10 states (Asian and in combination):
1.
California: 4,915,225
2. New York: 1,415,502
3. Texas: 891,844
4. Hawaii: 708,074
5. New Jersey: 685,068
6. Illinois: 596,109
7. Washington: 505,255
8. Florida: 478,233
9. Virginia: 414,944
10. Massachusetts: 336,803

Top 10 states by percentage (Asian alone: United States by States; and Puerto Rico - GCT0204. Percent of the Total Population Who Are Asian Alone<BR>Universe: Total population)

1. Hawaii: 38.7%
2. California: 12.3%
3. New Jersey: 7.5%
4. New York: 6.9%
5. Washington: 6.5%
6. Nevada: 6.0%
7. Maryland: 4.9%
8. Virgina: 4.8%
Massachusetts: 4.8%
10. Alaska: 4.5%

There are A LOT of Asians in Florida, however there isn't a HUGE (meaning more than 100,000+) concentration anywhere in the state but rather spread out everywhere.

I have relatives who live in Boca Raton, Tampa (but originally first lived in the Los Angeles area) and Jacksonville (of course, affiliated with the navy). Like other immigrant groups, it takes time to spread out throughout the United States. Keep in mind that up until 2000, MOST Asian Americans (meaning more than 50%) lived in the Western United States. However, due to the EXTREMELY bad economy here and the realization that other places in the United States aren't scary, Asians have spread out everywhere (just look at the NY area!).

To be fair, Florida has probably one of the fastest growing Asian foreign born population in the US.

Foreign Born from Asia, 2009
Total obtaining Legal Permanent Resident Status: 413,312
New Arrivals: 184,019
Adjustment of Status: 229,293

Top States for New Permanent Residents:
1. California: 117,446
2. New York: 58,012
3. Texas: 28,314
4. New Jersey: 21,034
5. Illinois: 16,138
6. Virginia: 13,732
7. Florida: 12,726
8. Washington: 12,207
9. Michigan: 11,089
10. Georgia: 9,900

^ thanks for the stats! I'm really surprised that Florida even ranks in the Top 10 for Asians. I would tend to think that the geographic distance from the west coast/Pacific areas might also play a factor as well.
On another note even though Florida has a lot of hispanics we don't have as many Mexicans compared to other states.

Geography USED to play a larger role, but I do not think so as much nowadays. After all, there are 1.6 million Latinos in the Chicago area (of which 77% are Mexican), and that's nowhere NEAR the Mexican border. Thanks to technology, a lot of that is mitigated.

I think this would surprise a lot of people, but a flight from a lot of Asia to the East Coast isn't drastically different than a flight across the Pacific (keep in mind, the Pacific is MUCH MUCH larger than the Atlantic, and only getting larger with time)

Distance between Cities and Countries by Plane
New York to Beijing: 6,842 miles
Los Angeles to Beijing: 6,265 miles (600 mile difference = 1.5 hour flight)
San Francisco to Beijing (SF is further west than LA): 5,918 miles

New York to New Delhi: 7,319 miles
Los Angeles to New Delhi: 8,005 miles
San Francisco to New Delhi: 7,692 miles (380 mile difference = 45 minutes)

*Note: Most Asians get here by plane. Sure, there are a whole bunch of illegal ones who come by boat, and those probably end up more on the West Coast than East since there are less noticeable land barriers for ships.

In 10 years, I'd be curious to see what will happen.
