If you shop at the 99-cent stores (like me!) you probably consume some food after the specified dates. But I think a lot of these dates are just arbitrary.
All depends what it is. For the most part I do.
I had sour cream in fridge 1 week past due date. It had never been opened...it was fine.
I also had several blocks of cream cheese past due date by a few months... it was also fine.
By law they have to put a date on products.
^^^ yes, and they make good money on all those people that discard perfectly good food because of the expiration date.
I am more worried about where the food came from... Lately, when I check on it, I do not see where it was made, just who distributed it. Especially meds/vitamins. To me that's scary!
I opened a can of campbells tomato soup today & the soup was dark red. The best buy date was 09. I trashed it. I had 6 boxes of hamburger helper that exp in 09 & i just dont care much for hamburger helper so i gave it to a neighbor.
Maybe this isn't the best example, but I bought a slice of chocolate cake from Fresh & Easy this past Sunday off their discount shelves because it was one day past the sell by date. I didn't get a chance to eat it until yesterday and it was still fresh and VERY tasty. I didn't even get a stomach ache.
It depends on what it is...for milk I discard after 2 days after the expiration date. For canned goods I discard after 6-9 months...but I did read an email about bisquick and some other products and they say it's harmful to eat those certain products after the exp. date. What I do to prevent wasting food is to make sure everything I buy has the furtherest exp. date. Like if I am getting milk i pick the bottle with the date that is out the furtherest. Sometimes I notice when they stock stores (very common in wal-mart) they put the newest merchandise in the front but they really should put it behind the older products...so sometimes u may have to look at the product dates.
No, I don't. I'm very afraid of food poisoning. It really has to depend on the product itself. Anything over 30 days past the due date gets tossed. HA! Then I stand there and wonder why my fridge is empty! Then I go to Mom's house and she feeds me.
I always wonder about dry spices, I swear I've got some oregano that has been around since 2003. But you look at it and figure what could possibly make that go bad?
I love pulling milk out to find better dates, I've scored an additional week while stupidly clutching four milk containers and holding the cooler door open with my knee. There is always a better milk somewhere deep in the bowels of that cooler, and I'm gonna find it goddamit.
Also wonder about bologna. Given enough time it appears to sweat and darken in colour around the edges. But it is bologna, I'm not in Italy here in America that is barely even food. I love it, but like Velveeta I'm not confident in labeling it food so it lasts as long as it maintains it's beautiful pinkish/gray hue. Haven't gotten sick from bologna yet.
