To get the best tasting cold tea do this:
simply toss a few tea bags (roughly one bag per 4 cups of water) into a pitcher and pour in the cold water.
Depending on how strong you like your tea, experiment with the timing. Generally, 8-12 hours will be the perfect steep time for a cold-brewed cup of tea. The following day you'll open the fridge to already chilled iced tea and you won't have had to heat up your kitchen to make it.
For extra flavor, try infusing some herbs or fruit with the tea as well, like plums, peaches, rosemary, or lemon basil.
To make sun tea, follow the same instructions; just let the tea steep in the sun on a window ledge or on the porch for a few hours before putting in the fridge.
Brewing iced tea with cold water is a great way to get the more subtle, true flavors that come about when heat isn't used.
I avoid suntea, it encourages icky bacteria to grow in the tea and I am very sensitive to bad tea. I make it the old fashioned way on the stove, but I'll give your cold brew method a try, sounds so easy.
Another easy way to add an herbal flavor is add a few herbal teabags along with your regular ones. I especially like mint in my iced tea.
What tea brand do you use? I've experimented and I really do think Luzianne makes the best iced tea, although I like Twining's for hot tea.
For a fancy threat: I appreciate Keemun, Assam, and Russian teas.
I always use loose leaves, those are whole leaves and taste different than tea fannings that have been proccessed from tea leaves into very tiny particles.
When drinking bagged tea, I can even taste the paper bag...
