Hello all, I will be driving from Boston to Breckenridge, CO next week and I was wondering if there are any must stops along the way. I'm not looking for anything fancy or expensive, just some great food that will hit the spot after/before/during a long day on the road.
Truck stops are usually a safe bet for down home kind of food, tons of it, at a good price.
I try to eat light during the driving time though, as eating too much is quite uncomfortable and makes me sleepy.
I save the big meal for when I stop for the night and can walk around alittle before turning in for the night.
Safe trip, and good eats.
They used to serve good, filling farmhouse dinners at the big restaurant in Amana, Iowa. That might be worth a stop at midday. But I haven't been there in a long time.
Truck stops are the best bet for getting poorly prepared foods in any area. And it is pretty consistent among the chains - Petro, Flying J, Pilot, Truckstops of America. Their inability to produce even basic dishes well is stunning.
Unfortunately, when you are pulling a load, you are unable to get off the highway a few miles and get to a decent restaurant in town

There are a few truck stops that are independently operated, and not associated with any of those chains. Some of them have very good food. As you're heading down the road, ask truckers at rest stops where the good food is.
A couple years ago, someone on C-D recommended a truck stop at one of the Wyoming exits near the Nebraska line, that had excellent Indian food.

The local independents have been CONSISTENTLY worse than the chains.
You are better off leaving the freeway and heading into town where the better places are, unless you are pulling an 18 wheeler.
