Hold a match between your lips while cutting onions if you can't tolerate the burning and crying.

Haven't tried it yet to see if it works, but saw lots of cooks in Asia doing this.

A lit match, a burnt match, or an unlit match?

Chop onions underwater. The onions that is.

Water catches the gas that's released by onions when chopped, thus saving your eyes the trouble.

Keep your onions in the fridge and use a sharp knife. Haven't shed an onion-cut tear since I started doing that. And NO, the onions don't make everything else in the fridge smell.

The sharp knife is important too. A dull one merely mashes, not cleanly cut the membranes.

I find that wearing contacts helps too. When I am wearing my contacts, no problem. With glasses, there is a problem!

I noticed that, too. I always thought I had an immunity to the onion thing until I chopped one when I had contacts out and was wearing my glasses. That stuff's no joke!

Under running water works great. It washes away the rising gases before they ever get to your eyes.
