Can you all recommend a good cookbook or source of reciepes for low cost/low income cooking? I prefer to do my own cooking but am looking for ways to economize..

Two ground rules....
1. I dont use much meat in my cooking (so meatless recipes are OK0
2. I try to buy fresh or frozen veggies and fresh fruit (not too much processed foods)

...so would look for some recs on good sources on cheap food recipes, etc..

Go to your library and check out this book. It will have a lot of information you can use, recipes and sourcing, as well as a lot of other things:

the library is a great place to start and so it the net. Just go to recipes; budget meals and you will be surprised what will come up? Another is food network and try $10.00 meals by Melissa. She always has great low cost meals and many call for very little meat.

I agree with this. Practically every time I buy a book nowadays, while reading it I'm thinking "there's no information in here that I couldn't find on the internet for free." Not only that, but the information found on the internet is usually better.

The books I buy usually just sit there collecting dust while I get information from internet sources and forums.

I no longer buy cookbooks, and mostly look up recipes online. The cookbooks I already have are good resources, and I don't really need to add to them with more costly books that take up more space than I have.

I'm still a fan of books for pleasure reading, but for cooking and recipes, online sources have served me well.

I love cookbooks, but honestly, for what you're asking - I'd start with allrecipes.com

so much info/recipes/menus to be had there!

Gotta agree with the internets! also it's nice to see a vid on how to do some things. As far as using fresh or less meat, sub out what they use with what ya got or what ya like.

I see a recipe as just a good guideline. But then again I've been told to follow directions.

Another vote for using the internet! There are tons of sites and blogs out there devoted to low-cost living in general, and cooking in particular. The Simple Dollar blog has a bunch of frugal fresh food recipes. Allrecipes is great too.

But since you asked also for a book, I recommend anything by Madhur Jaffrey. If you like Indian cooking (which I adore.) Vegetarian Indian food can be insanely cheap, once you have the right spices on hand.

Madhur Jaffrey Indian Cooking: Madhur Jaffrey: 9780764156496: Amazon.com: Books
