I preferred Hostess - they must use more corn syrup or something. TastyKake always seemed second rate and on the edge of staleness to me. Hostess was more lush with a better 'mouth feel.' Now I haven't eaten them in a while - the icing is plasticy, the chocolate is tasteless, and the pies are pasty and blah.
I prefer TastyKake. Contrary to what another poster said, I always felt TastyKake tasted somehow fresher and more "authentic" than Hostess. TastyKake makes a delicious Butterscotch Krimpets!
Agree with the above post. Tastycake tastes more real. The Krimpets and the chocolate cupcakes are yummy. I don't miss Hostess, but did have a soft spot for Devil Dogs, but Drakes is gone now too.
The krimpets frosting is a little plasticy, but that's part of the charm. I agree with the poster who says that tastykake tastes fresher. It's been a while since my last Tastykake, but I generally only recall eating the peanut butter cakes, krimpets, the hostess-like cupcakes (they make red velvet now!) and the pies. I think that the products themselves seem more authentic and similar to actual bakery items. I would say that while neither are great bakery items, but definitely tastykake over hostess!
Tastykakes over Hostess. When I was very young, I ate both, especially ding dongs and snowballs. But most of my life was spent eating Chocolate Juniors, butterscotch krimpets, chocolate cupcakes, and peanut butter tandytakes (and sometimes even the pies).
While I now prefer either homemade pastries or really good bakery items, there are days when only a good Tastykake will do.
