WayBack Machine... canned bread or cake?? (Chocolate cake, snacks, cream, gourmet)

Hi, Everyone! I'm having a discussion with my older sister about a canned product my mother used to bring home occasionally, maybe even around the holidays.

I remember it as cake and she remembers it as brown bread, but it came in a can and was delicious.

This would have been some time in the 50's. I was very young, of course!

Does anyone remember anything like this? It was New York State if that matters.

I still see it in specialty stores. If we are talking about the same thing it is B&M canned bread. I've never bought it but I have seen other people eat it with baked beans.

It's brown bread which is somewhat sweet, so it's sorta cakelike.

they are right,,its brown bread, or boston bread,,,,has molasses in it,,i didnt like it at all,,,,but can still remember the smell,,,

b&m baked beans were made in maine- burnham and merrill

Thank you, both of you. I'll look up the B&M bread. I could have sworn it was chocolate cake... but what do I know, I wasn't old enough to know the difference!

Old-time New Englanders still steam their brown bread. It has an unusual but interesting taste and texture when prepared in that fashion. It's till the traditional accompaniment to baked beans. Get some B&M brown bread on amazon and give it a try. Amazon is muuch less expensive than Vermont Country Store.

I recommend preparing the baked beans yourself. It is time-consuming but not really much work, mostly just a matter of waiting for the beans to be ready. I definitely. recommend a recipe using salt pork.

Wow, just saw the price of this on Amazon...rather pricey. Go on youtube and look up the GoodEats episode on molasses they make it there. Its very easy I have done it myself many times. You won't be disappointed if you do it.
