An inlaw of mine will buy lettuce, clean it and then store it in one of these newspaper bags shown in the picture (w/o the paper) until its gone. Now, she says she only uses the "outer" bag when the newspaper person "double" bags it.
Yuk! I don't see the point of cleaning the lettuce first, since it would have to be cleaned again after touching that bag. (Before I would eat it, anyway.)
That's gross! She must be cheap because why not use a zip loc bag or the bags they have in the produce section?? I don't wash my lettuce until The day I am using it because it gets slimy.

I don't even want to think of the hands that might have touched those bags. Besides they just throw them in your grass, driveway, street, wherever!
Americans are the only people in the world that worry about everything being "sanitary". I can't imagine how we would survive in another country... It doesn't appear your friend is any worse for wear right?
Is it the plastic bag or the newsprint that came out of the bag that bothers people?
Back in the day when people baked cookies, they came out of the oven and onto the newspaper to cool off, so that doesn't bother me.
I'm also willing to bet those plastic bags aren't any less sanitary than the ones you pull off the rack at the produce department.
