I drink sweet tea all day and don't notice it relaxing me. One cup of coffee in the morning does.

There is "tea" the substance which is tea leaves, and "tea" the preparation which is soaking various substances in hot water.

"Tea" the substance contains caffeine, "tea" the preparation method, depends on what ingredient you are steeping in the how water.

If it doesn't actually contain tea leaves (camellia sinensis, which white tea, yellow tea, green tea, oolong, pu-erh tea and black tea are all varieties of, just with different oxidation levels and processes), the appropriate term is actually "infusion" or "tisane," not tea... but "tea" is obviously used colloquially for herbal "teas," accurate terminology or not.

I have never heard the term "tea" used in reference to the process of infusing in hot water, myself. That's a new one on me. I've heard"steeping," "brewing," and "infusing," but that's it.

When my daughter went through a rough patch a few years ago she practically lived on herbal teas with words like "calming" "stress relieving" and "mood lifting". I have no idea if they really did anything but they helped just by making her THINK they might help and giving her a feeling of control. They didn't hurt, and kept her busy. LOL.

I find the ritual of preparing tea calming if I focus and am mindful when I'm doing it. When the husband bought the KCup machine for coffee , I tried a couple of teas in it but found it didn't do it for me - the immediate gratification I guess, LOL

Yep - for many relaxing activities, it's the routine itself and associations one makes with it that are calming. I know people who find running to be the ultimate in relaxation, when it's clearly a physically stimulating activity. Mental relaxation and physiological relaxation don't always occur in tandem.

The level of caffeine in teas is not so high that a single cup is going to set most people's nerves a-jangling.

My husband loves arizona brand tea, says it has great flavor. He never has said it helps him relax or anything just likes it. He gets diet.

Besides the ritual, there's also the taste and the memory of a calm, quiet break. I've been know to take a tea break in my mind when things get stressful but taking a real break isn't an option right then.
