Not sure what to make of the proverbial new (old) kid on the block as this India based company tries to re-boot the Urbanspoon brand, albeit with some major changes.
For starters, it looks like they'll be concentrating on "major metros" initially instead of trying to cover every location everywhere. It also appears that they'll be relying on paid staff for outreach in updating locations, sourcing menus, etc. Not sure if the crowdsourcing model had run it's course on Urbanspoon, but it always seemed that the review count was dominated by "one-shot reviewers" that had an axe to grind and didn't provide the more serious users with anything other than a good laugh.
Major missteps in handling their "prime" members (roughly equivalent to yelp "elites") by the transition team led to a significant exodus or other non-participation, which has seriously impacted the Z site's usefulness in my area (San Antonio TX). I was wondering if that was part of a nationwide trend or merely an isolated instance.
Don't worry, I'm pretty sure they migrated most everything over, lock, stock, and barrel. Their San Antonio coverage would have otherwise disappeared completely.
Was tempted to delete my entire profile, but figured I'd lose the first 6-7 years of "foodie" history along with great pix for long gone favorites, so all that is still there-for all the good 2 year old reviews might do.
A perfect summary of the company's state from the comments in the Seattle Times story:
"I suppose you could say that Zomato is 100% done in the United States."
I prefer Yelp. And Yelp can be sorted to Yelp Elite reviewers to eliminate the one shot wonders or those fake reviews from restaurant employees.
