Fish tacos are everywhere now, but I remember that the Taco Bell in Huntington Beach sold them when no other Taco Bell (at least around here) did.
I really like them. Rubio's, one of the originals, still has some of the best. But I have a friend who left SoCal in the 1980s and missed the beginning of the fish taco fad. To her, they are "NOT real tacos" and she wants nothing to do with them.
Bean soft tacos are wonderful!! I make them with black or pinto beans (homemade is way better, obviously) and top them with sour cream or drained yogurt, chopped onion, and a squeeze of lime.
There are so many variations, I could never choose.
By the way, has anyone mentioned fish tacos? I'm not a big fish fan, but I like the Baja-style ones. Battered-and-fried fish, shredded cabbage, creamy white sauce. Lemon/lime. Hot sauce. Nummers.
This is something I never had available until moving to another city in my 30s. Where I grew up, they were in general not available at the local, family-run taquerias...only ones with skirt steak, tripe, tongue, carnitas, sometimes shredded chicken, al pastor...most of the Mexican immigrants where I grew up were from central Mexico, vs. coastal, so fish and shrimp was not common, traditionally.
I do like (some) fish tacos. I just wasn't raised on them.
I don't remember eating tacos as a child in New York City but that does not mean that they did not exist. I mostly ate food from my own culture (and Chinese and Italian) so I was not very well-rounded.

Seriously? I've never heard of that. I have to say, I don't think I'd be bold enough to try fish tacos from Taco Bell.

I was in my early 20s before I was convinced to try them. Sounded gross to me. I was actually in Mexico at the time, and feeling a little worse for wear from the night before, and was talked into trying them. For breakfast! But they were right, the tacos were great.
Being from San Diego and living in Germany I miss good tacos. I remember driving down to the boarder just to buy a bunch of tacos from a street vendor. Also the fish tacos at the Ensenada fish market.
I do pretty well at making them here, did some Rubios's like fish tacos a few weeks ago. I do Carne Asada from time to time and make some killer frijoles :-D
I remember my brother introducing tacos to our family because they were being made in his college frat house. This was in southern VA in the early '70's. I also remember my mother exclaiming about the mess they made.
I grew up in northern Illinois where there were a lot of Mexican immigrants, and in 1955 when my mom was pregnant with my youngest sister dad would have to drive by a local taqueria and get her tacos and tamales.
First time I ran into fish tacos was at a restaurant in San Diego back in the early 1980s. Women were making fresh tortillas in the front window of the restaurant which was a brilliant marketing technique. Have never had fish tacos since then that could measure up to those.

Taco Del Mar is a taco chain that specializes in fish tacos. They are everywhere on the West Coast.
