I'd go so far as to say never eat hot dogs, rendering the ketchup issue moot, but still, to contribute to this debate...
The only time I've heard of not putting ketchup on something is for them fancy hamburgers like those made with kobe beef. They'll put some onion on it, but otherwise, it's "wrong" to treat it like a fast casual burger and put the full fixings on there.
"Crap meats"you say? you any idea of what goes into a hotdog? Basically, the stuff they scrape from the slaughterhouse floor.
I love hot dogs! Grilled with spicy horse radish mustard, or with Coney Island onions, or with fresh chopped onion,tomatoes, dill pickles and celery salt, or chili, or sauerkraut and mustard. And many other toppings.
You like ketchup? Don't let the "Hot Dog Council" stop you. But do know what goes into your average hot dog.
Snobbishness about what you can put on hot dogs! Give us all a break, foodies. The simple answer is that yes it is okay to put a junk condiment on junk food.
When I was young and foolish I must admit that I sometimes used ketchup on my hot dogs. But once I became a grown man I realized the folly of my ways. Now it's mustard, dill relish and chopped sweet white onions only.
