I've never liked mustard, even though I'm well over 25 now. But for some reason, I have 3 kinds of mustard going bad in my fridge.
Seems like ketchup and even mayo are much easier to find than mustard at fast food places. It may just be a case of people not being exposed to it so they don't try it at home. Ketchup is sweeter and cheaper to produce, so the FF places push it.
I just turned 76. I have never cared much for mustard.
However, I made deviled eggs for Christmas at daughter's house, and sure wish I had put just a little bit of mustard in with the yolks. They were good, but a little bland. The mustard would have added some needed zing!
I would agree that mustard can be an acquired taste and probably increases in popularity in older demographics, but I have known many, many kids who liked, or at least were not averse to, mustard.
I think people are going to other spicy sauces instead of mustard, whereas people who prefer the familiar are still stuck on ketchup. People are also going for more gourmet mustard options and the decline is just in regular yellow mustard.
This question is just one out of vague curiosity, as I have heard and in some cases have observed that the condiment mustard is seemingly in decline or at the very least, is mostly enjoyed by the middle aged or older population, so I thought I would start a thread on this topic and while I’m at it, include a poll where other cd members can vote, also, please feel free to give a brief explanation as to why and which vote you selected
You didn't define mustard. You mean brown mustard, yellow mustard, honey mustard....what?
I voted not true, at least in my household as a family of 4 with 2 young boys.
as a kid, I didn't care for it growing up but love all kinds of mustards now as an adult.
husband always use mustard or horseradish as his choice of condiments, even as a kid. destested ketchup then and still do now.
oldest kid (6) never had much of sweet tooth; prefers French or grey mustard on his hotdog and sandwiches.
youngest (4) only likes mustard for his hotdog but not on his sandwiches.

Sriracha is apparently more popular than catsup today in the USA. You see it everywhere - even places that don't have tabasco.
