I went to an Asian market and got a pineapple for $1.49. A steal..usually $2.49 is the cheapest on sale. They had the leaves cut off. The sign said pineapple, no leaves. Okay, a whole pineapple with the green leaves looks pretty on the kitchen counter for a day or two, but then they get cut off and refrigerated, so it wasn’t a problem to not have leaves.

But when I cut it open, I was shocked to see pink rather than yellow! Thinking it was mold or bacteria, I threw it away. But later my curiosity got the better of me. There ARE pink pineapples, deliberately genetically modified for added lycopene and novelty. But since these weren’t sold specifically as pink pineapple, no way would I eat it. Would you?

I saw the pink pineapples in the grocery a while back, maybe around Valentine's Day? We both have a problem eating fresh pineapple because of the acid, so I didn't buy one. If I was in your situation, knowing that there was such a thing, I think I would have pulled up a picture and tried a small piece before throwing it away. When I was younger and before I developed the allergy/reaction, I never came across an odd colored pineapple and I ate lots of them back then.

If I hadn't known about them in advance, probably would have tossed it.

I'll bet the Asian market got them at a good price because they didn't seem to sell well, at least in the grocery where I shop. They hung around for several weeks and then all disappeared.

Wow, you got it for $1.49! I heard of them for the very 1st time when a pair of youtubers I watch bought one & showed themselves discussing it, cutting, & tasting it. They paid a LOT for it though. I'd get one, but since they're pricey (or maybe not always), I'd probably only buy it once or twice. Here are the videos:

Start watching at 16:30 minutes to see the store in California where they bought it:

Start watching at 14 minutes to see them cut it open & talk about how it tastes:

Pink pineapple, grapples ( apples that taste like grapes), and cotton candy grapes. ( grapes that taste like Cotton candy). I’ve tried them all and they taste as advertised.

Nothing new, really, they are on the market at least for 4 years. Not very common, though.
Del Monte Fresh Produce has been playing around with a strain of pineapples since 2005 that changed the fruit’s color and flavor.
Pink pineapple is just another genetically engineered fruit.

The pineapples were simply "engineered to produce lower levels of the enzymes already in conventional pineapple that convert the pink pigment lycopene to the yellow pigment beta carotene. Lycopene is the pigment that makes tomatoes red and watermelons pink, so it is commonly and safely consumed."

They're so pretty! I could picture making it part of a really pretty brunch layout.

I don't want pink pineapple. Pink grapefruit was enough.

I've never seen or had one, but I would try it, if I saw one on sale. I wouldn't have thrown it out, if I find something unexpected about the food I buy, I google it & see why.
But I like the regular pineapple, so maybe I wouldn't bother buying a pink one.
