Serioius question:
Why do people typically use chopsticks to eat at Asian restaurants in the U.S.?
It is arguably MUCH more efficient to use a fork/knife/spoon, even for those skilled in the art of chop-stickery.
Do chopsticks make the food taste better? Some are made of wood, some of plastic - I have never noticed an improvement in taste, but maybe I'm too obtuse.
Is it to get a more authentic Asian dining experience? If that is the case, why is using chopsticks the chosen custom? There are lots of other Asian dining customs that we do not imitate - at least not nearly as widely as chop-stickery.
Are chopsticks simply "cooler" to use? You are using two sticks to eat your food - Moderator cut: deleted
We were at a Vietnamese restaurant the other night and my wife was using the chopsticks. I asked her why (for the love of God, WHY?), and she said it keeps her from eating the yummy food too quickly. OK, I can see this, but then why not have chopsticks available at the Italian place so you don't stuff your face with too much lasagna?
Some enlightenment from the folks on this forum, please?
Actually, foods do taste better with chop sticks. Or it just doesn't feel right to eat certain foods with fork and knife. Of course it's because I grew up eating with chop sticks. It's a comfort thing with me.
I love chopsticks!
Juggler, your whole, rather ethnocentric, argument is that a knife and fork is more efficient.
Not so!
Are you contending that chopsticks are more efficient than a knife and fork? I can understand people being very proficient in using chopsticks, but a knife & fork still wins the efficiency battle. If you have info to the contrary, please share...

I'm so glad my parents taught all of us when we were young - plus I get to impress my friends with my "special skills."
Thanks for the honest response.

i grew up using chopsticks so it's just weird not to use it when i eat asian food. i like the feeling of scooping the rice and i can't imagine using anything but chopsticks with sushi!
Reasons to use chopsticks:
1. The food is prepared in a way that is meant to be eaten with chopsticks not forks and knives.
2. It slows you down so you won't be a big fat American and can get more enjoyment out of the food and in the end, eat less.
3. It's the right thing to do. Would you eat fried chicken and ribs with a knife and fork? Ice cream with a knife?
4. Don't make the rest of us look like cultural idiots. What would you think of a Japanese person who used chopsticks to eat spaghetti?
