I was talking with a neighbor when she was making sandwiches for her grandchildren and asked me if I wanted one, too. Finally, when it seemed all the kids were fed or eating, she put some mayo on two slices of bread, placed a pile of sliced onions on one side and then put the other slice of bread on top, cut it in half and asked again if I was sure I didn't want a sandwich. I shook my head. Then she ate her onion sandwich.
I was tickled. I thought I was the only one that ate onion sandwiches! How many others are there? Who else eats onion sandwiches?
My mom used to describe how her dad would fix himself onion sandwiches every Sunday evening, and her mom would make him sit next to the fireplace so that the onion fumes would go up the chimney instead of stinking up the place. She grew up loving them, and passed the onion-loving gene on to me.
Thanks for the reminder - I think I know what I'm going to have for lunch today!
I love a ton of onions in a grilled cheese sandwich.
When I was pregnant with my first child I had to have onions on everything and it didn't matter what it was.
I'm into onions raw, fried, sandwiches, most anyway you can imagine...Not plain boiled though...I like certain varieties for specific uses...Granex types for raw (short day) and the pungent yellow onions for cooking...I've heard it said the only way to cook a summer squash was to add 8 big onions per squash...
