Mellow Mushroom started out as a local place and has grown into a chain (more than 150 locations, I believe), and I like it better than 90% of the local pizza places. In fact, we're ordering in lunch from there today.

MM is predominately SE US, Atlanta up to the Carolinas, down to N. Florida. So it didn't grow up in a "pizza mecca". As such, it has probably taken SE regional tastes into account when developing its recipes.
Therefore, the question I'd ask is not whether you like them more than a local shop but whether you like them more than a national chain (Pizza Hut, Domino's, Godfather, Little Caesar's, Papa John's, et.al.).

Here in Helena the answer is yes- Bullmans pizza is a small two store operation and they are simply the best. Real wood fired oven, the most awesome ingredients, fast and really friendly. Best pie in town, hands down, bar none. I don't go anywhere else, cause nothing else is as good.
Location: The Northeast - hoping one day the Northwest!

Most chains did start off that way. Pizza Hut started off w/ two brothers in the 50's in KS. But, Mellow Mushroom is the exception I feel to pizza chains. Although, yes they are chain they are not on the same line as Papa Johns, Dominos and Pizza Hut.
I wish they would expand further north. Mellow Mushroom is by far my favorite chain pizza restaurant. Closest one to me now is DC.

I don't think it's so much SE regional tastes as it is playing with non-standard pizza tastes. They play with a lot of unconventional toppings ... Mediterranean flavors, curry, etc.
We had an explosion of mom and pop pizza places start up in the late 40's and early 50's after WWII. These are primarily owned by Italian and Sicilian immigrants. Nothing else compares, they are in a class by themselves. Many are combined with lake taverns or small bars.
We are never hurting for the good stuff, that's for sure.
I've never loved it or thought it's great, but at one point, it was passable pizza if you had to quickly feed a group of not-too-discerning people in a pinch (it used to get ordered for staff inservices a lot at my old job, and for things like scouting groups I'd work with). It seems like in the past couple of years, the recipes for everything from dough to sauce have drastically changed, though.
Not in my case (small town), although the local joint isn't bad.
But you just can't beat a Pizza Hut pan pizza, in my (admittedly non-gourmet and not-well-traveled) opinion. I could eat just the crust with nothing on it, and always do really enjoy eating the "handle" as much as the part with toppings (I always get Veggie Lovers).
