Having worked in a restaurant, I think it is a few things:
Mostly, they are actually very labor intensive. You have to cut, soak and bread each one. You have to bread them "per order" or else they will be nasty. That means every time someone orders, you get your fingers breaded too, so you have to wash your hands and get all the gunk off of them. then they take about five minutes to cook in the grease, and you can only put a few in the fryer at once (2-4 depending on the size of fryer). They make a complete mess in the kitchen, grease everywhere, and they pretty much destroy the oil by releasing so much breading into it, that you have to filter, clean and reclean the fryer longer every night, and finally, the oil won't last as long, and if you look to see how much oil costs, then figure on about 50# to fill up one fryer.
So it seems like it's just an onion and some bread-meal, but it's a lot more.
And add to that that they are very popular, and if they were cheaper, people would just order more of them, and the wait would be too long, so my guess is that supply and demand dictates that this is the going rate to sell as many as you can produce, at the highest price.
As for me, I think they are nasty too. I try (usually unsuccessfully) to stay away from fried products, but this is just too much, unless it's on onion for a group of 6 or more.
bloomin onion is also one of the most unhealthy foods one man or woman can digest. Why waste 8 bucks on a fatty onion with spice? Just my 2 cents.
Because sometimes it's not just about physical health? Even Adelle Davis in one of her books said something along the lines of (it's been literally decades sent I read it so the wording might not be exact): "We all know that candy is bad for you. But it's essential to your soul! So make sure have some now and again."
I know, I like the Bloomin Onion too and even at the Outback steakhouse they are around 8 bucks and its like OK, onion, seasoned batter and throw in the fryer. It doesnt seem like they should be so expensive for a darn Onion!!
By the way Great Pictures on your profile.
I think they were only about $6 last time I went to Outback here, but it feeds at least two people, usually more as an appetizer. So that's pretty cheap considering.
Theres not as much profit on an onion as you may think. I use to think the same way so I Bought a Concession trailer in 2009 to make my fortune and so far im lucky to break even. A 50lb. bag of onions has about 22 onions aprox. thats about $4.00 profit then u have to take out payroll for your people , cost to set up at festival, taxes, permits, license's etc. Trust me you have to cell a lot of onions to make your fortune. Just wanted you to from the other side of the Bloomin line. Also most of the time 1 onion will feed 2 or 3 people. Thats not bad for $8.00.
Why does every food thread have to be threadjacked by some cretin who wants to point out nutritional concerns? Why don't they start their own thread which they can use to pontificate their views?
