My late great uncle got his 1971 Mercedes up to about a million miles. He had the engine rebuilt at least once and bodywork done at least twice over the 15 years he owned it. Didn't come close to that with the 1986 Mercedes he traded it in for. Don't think he got more the 50,000 on that one, the car was fine, he had a stroke and had to give up driving!
do a search on the net. Apparently there are quite a few vehicles with over a mil miles.. Amazing. Sorry Ido not believe it that this guy with this 5.4 triton don't change oil for sometimes 55k miles.. no way. If so he blows ALL the critical thinking out the window when it comes to proper maintenance.
people knock Fords a lot, but they do make a good truck/van. My first new vehicle was a 1993 F150 with the 4.9 straight 6 engine, engine never gave me one ounce of trouble for 11 years and 170k miles and guy I sold it to in 2004 still has it so I do believe it, but 55k no oil change? The protective properties of the oil has to be shot by then...that I find hard to believe.
Oh current vehicle is a 2004 f150 82k miles guess I'm good for a while longer

According to his website the van uses at least a quart every tank, so in effect he is constantly changing the oil through attrition and replacement.
Plus he said that's the longest he's gone, he usually changes it every 10K-20K miles. As much oil as it uses it would take some time for it to get dirty enough to compromise filter performance, so I can see that.
Besides, I really don't think most people do any "critical thinking" when it comes to oil changes; most of us just do what the people who make money off of oil changes tell us to do without really thinking about whether it's really necessary.
It looks like we're a little late getting this story, apparently the van passed away a couple of months ago:

The Million Mile Van has finally died. 50 miles away from home in Bryon, Ohio on Saturday afternoon July 30, 2011. The oil pressure dropped to nothing. I stopped, turned off the van probably at least a dozen times trying to limp it home. I would turn it off, turn it back on and that would make the oil pressure go back up but only for a mile or two then it would drop to nothing again. Finally at 1,299,986 miles it died. Only 14 miles from 1.3 million. For now I still have the van. I'm not sure what I'll do with it. If it was still running my plans were to put it on Ebay and/or a few other ideas but now that it's dead....the junk yard may be where it ends up. I will try to update the website soon. Thank you all for watching and cheering me on for these last 300,000 miles.
Call Ford and see if they want it for research. I'm sure they would love to have it if it's just going to the crusher.
